Brazil is the single biggest exporter of agricultural products to the EU worldwide. Exporting goods to Europe can be a game-changer for Brazilian businesses, but one big mistake can lead to costly delays, fines, or even seizure of shipments: misclassifying goods under customs codes.

Every product entering EU countries must be classified under the EU’s Combined Nomenclature (CN) system. This code determines tariffs, duties, and compliance requirements for each product. You can consult the EU TARIC database to verify your product’s correct classification at https://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/dds2/taric/taric_consultation.jsp .

In the past, a Brazilian exporter of canned goods misclassified their products as "preserved vegetables" instead of "prepared meals". This error led to higher tariffs and a lengthy appeals process.

In 2021, a Brazilian exporter of organic coffee pods misclassified their product under the general "roasted coffee" code (0901.21) instead of the more specific code for "preparations based on coffee" (2101.12). The mistake led to a customs investigation and delayed clearance, costing the company time and money.

How can this be avoided?

For starters, you should provide detailed information about materials, composition, and intended use of your products. Vague descriptions like "cosmetics" or "machinery parts" can lead to errors. Instead of "wooden furniture," you should specify "solid oak dining table with glass top".  Also, make sure that all labels, invoices, and shipping documents match the declared classification. Inconsistent paperwork is a red flag for customs officials.
